  • UQ-mobile

ちなみにamazon.co.jpのリンクはこちら。

I always have an issue with cell phone usage in Japan. I have already experienced:

  • UQ-mobile trial one month free
  • bought pre-paid SIM card at the airport

UQ-mobile had been really really free for one month, but that rule was only applicable to Japanese resident, and it required an address in Japan. Of course, you can buy pre-paid SIM card at the airport as a lot of foreign traveler does. However, it costs about JPY3000, and I think it is a bit pricey. Also, the SIM does not have talk, so in case of emergency, you cannot call 119 (ambulance/firefighter call in Japan) nor the hotel. I am strongly willing to ask the Japanese government to take it consideration about that unfriendliness for foreign visitors…

Anyway, if you are MNO users such as Verison, AT&T, T-mobile, and Sprint in your own country, you can use your phone number in Japan if you use roaming. But I am using MVNO in the US because I am a kinda cost-cutter. I cannot communicate with anyone because of it.

So I dug into the web and found that the SIM card from Thailand and Hongkong are cheap and are available in Japan. If you buy one in Japan, Hongkong SIM is a bit cheaper than Thailand one. But in America, it takes a longer time to get Hongkong SIM, so I bought two Thailand SIMs from Amazon.com and will go to Japan.

I have bought AIS SIM and Truemove SIM. AIS uses Softbank as a roaming carrier in Japan, and Truemove uses Docomo. If you use AIS, your phone should communicate with LTE band 1,3,8 and 28. If you use Truemove, LTE band 1,3,19,21,28. I think (and a lot of Japanese thinks same too) Docomo is better than Softbank, but I want to try different types of SIMs.

Their costs are less than USD20 and they give you 4GB LTE data for one week. If you buy a pre-paid SIM at the airport in Japan, usually you need to pay more than USD30. Additionally, you can get Thailand voice phone numbers. You can communicate with your buddy using your Thailand phone number in Japan. That should be strange, huh??

Sometimes the SNS Apps in Japan need your real phone number. You may be able to utilize these number to sign-in that kind of SNS. I have no further idea of that 😉

Of course, you’ll need unlocked cell phone with Japanese LTE band coverage.

Please feel free to ask me any questions.  Thanks!
